When to replace your fridge door seal

A fridge door seal (also known as a gasket) will need replacing when it shows signs of wear and tear. If the seal is hard and brittle and has lost its flexibility, it is another sign that it needs to be changed.

How to change your fridge door seal

If your food and drinks aren’t nice and cool, it could be that your fridge door seal is defective. Keep your food fresh and at a safe temperature by regularly checking for any signs of wear and tear or damage on your door seal.

Note, some seals are held into place by a metal retainer around the fridge door perimeter. If this is the case, lift the inside edge of the old seal to revel the screws and loosen (but do not remove) them before removing the old seal. After installing your new seal, be sure to tighten the retainer screws.

Step 1:    Remove the old seal from the refrigerator door by pulling the bottom corner and peeling off.
Step 2:    Starting at the top corners, start pressing the new seal firmly into place, then continue working your way around the door.
Step 3:    Close the fridge door to make sure seal is installed correctly and fridge closes firmly shut.

How to clean your fridge door seal

Wipe down the seal regularly with warm soapy water and a sponge (you can also use an old toothbrush to give it a light scrub). Then wipe down with a damp cloth.

Find your replacement seal

• To find the right spare part for your fridge or freezer, you will need your model number.
• If unsure where to find your model number, check out our guide. Most manufacturers will not make you have to pull your fridge out to obtain model information on the back of it. Although it may be on the back, there is most likely a second copy (simpler version) on the inside of the fridge. If it is not located on the side of the door once you open it, look for it on the front edge of the fridge/freezer cabinet.
