Top 10 tips for maintaining your microwave

1. Increase the lifespan of your microwave by cleaning it regularly. Use warm soapy water to wipe away food and liquid splatters.
2. Cover your food to prevent splashes. It will make clean up easier.
3. Use microwave safe dishware only! Never put aluminium foil, metal or dishware with gold or silver accents in the microwave.
4. Never run a microwave empty. The internal components of the microwave can absorb excessive heat and cause major damage to the appliance.
5. Use pre-programmed microwave cooking. These are designed to cook your food correctly whilst minimising energy loss.
6. Check the weight capacity of your microwave before placing large frozen items or heavier dishes.
7. Replace components such as light bulbs, turntables and door latches as soon as they become damaged. It is often cheaper to repair than buying a brand-new microwave.
8. Open and close the door carefully. Repeated force can damage the latches.
9. Do close your door properly - If the door is damaged or the seal is cracked, food won’t cook evenly and radiation can escape.
10. Guard against power surges. Unplug your microwave between uses or plug it into a surge protector.
