Rangehoods (also known as extractor hoods and stove hoods) are electric appliances that are mounted over the cooktop. The rangehood is an essential part of the kitchen and works to filter the air when cooking. A rangehood effectively reduces odours when cooking, minimises heat and smoke and helps to remove air borne grease particles.
1. Undermount rangehoods are usually found neatly tucked away in the kitchen cabinetry.
2. Slide out rangehoods are often installed into your kitchen cabinetry. These also feature a fan that switches on when you slide out and lights to brighten the cooktop surface.
3. Canopy rangehoods – Usually larger in size and made of stainless steel, they are extremely effective in capturing heat and steam due to their size.
4. Fixed rangehoods are often feature pieces and larger in size. They are set against the wall and have a large air collection area.
Our step by step guide takes you through the easiest way to clean your rangehood filters.
Step 1: Remove your filters.
Step 2: Fill a sink or large baking dish or pot that is large enough for your filters to be completely immersed in with boiling water (the hotter the better!). Add a few drops of de-greasing dishwashing liquid. Add ½ cup of baking soda and give the solution a good mix.
Step 3: Place your filters in the hot, soapy solution. Let soak for approximately 15 minutes.
Step 4: Use your scrub brush to remove excess food particles and grease. Add extra dishwashing liquid to your brush if required.
Step 5: Rinse with hot water. Place on paper towels and allow to cool and dry completely. After they are dry, insert the filters back into your rangehood.
Ductless or recirculating hoods use charcoal filters. Charcoal filters are made of carbon material that traps contaminants and neutralises odours. They are more suitable for ductless rangehoods as they clear the air from unwanted fumes from your kitchen.
Mesh filters come in stainless steel and aluminium. This filter type comes with built-in technology that traps grease and slows down its accumulation. The mesh filter may come flat or level, which means the hood won’t have a grease trap.
