How to easily remove and replace your refrigerator door
Like any other appliance, your refrigerator needs occasional maintenance to keep it running efficiently. If you’re facing issues with your refrigerator door—whether it’s wear and tear, alignment problems, or significant scratches or damage—this step-by-step guide is here to help. We’ll walk you through the process of easily removing and replacing your refrigerator door.
When would you need to remove your refrigerator door?
If your refrigerator door has dents, scratches, or a broken hinge, it may need replacement for both looks and functionality.
If you are experiencing alignment Issues. Misaligned doors cause air leaks, making the fridge work harder to stay cool. If the door doesn’t close properly or is uneven, it may need adjusting or replacing.
Removing the refrigerator door for routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning the interior or accessing internal components, may be necessary from time to time.
If the hinges or other hardware on your refrigerator door are damaged or malfunctioning, you may need to remove the door to replace these components.
Safety first! Refrigerators are heavy appliances. Have help on hand to tackle this task. Always switch off the power from the power source before you start any refrigerator repairs. If in doubt, call a qualified service technician.
To remove the fridge door
Before you start, make sure you unplug your refrigerator.
Step 1:
To replace your refrigerator door, you will need to empty the contents of your refrigerator door shelves and remove any obstacles around the refrigerator so that you have space to tackle this task.
Step 2:
Most refrigerator models have a hinge cover at the top of the door. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the hinge cover.
Step 3:
Behind the hinge cover, you’ll find wiring connecting the door to the refrigerator. Carefully unplug these wires by pulling them apart or using a screwdriver to release the connectors.
Step 4:
With the wiring disconnected, locate the screws securing the hinge to the refrigerator. Using a screwdriver, remove these screws and set them aside in a safe place.
Step 5:
Once the screws are removed, carefully lift the door off the bottom hinge pin. Hold the door securely as you lift it to prevent any accidents. Place the door in a safe spot.
Note: If your fridge has a water/ice dispenser, you will need to remove the kick plate and the bottom hinge, using a screwdriver to remove the screws. Disconnect the waterline and the water tube.
To replace the refrigerator door
Step 1:
Position the replacement door in front of the refrigerator, ensuring it is facing the correct direction. Align the bottom hinge pin with the hinge opening on the refrigerator.
Step 2:
Once the door is aligned, insert the hinge screws and tighten them securely using a screwdriver. Ensure the door is firmly attached to the refrigerator and there is no wobbling.
Step 3:
With the door securely attached, reconnect the wiring by aligning the connectors and pushing them together until they click into place. Double-check to ensure all connections are secure.
Step 4:
Slide the hinge cover back into place over the hinge and press down until it snaps into position.
Step 5:
Plug the refrigerator back in and test the door to ensure it opens and closes smoothly without any issues. Make any necessary adjustments to the alignment if needed.
How to adjust refrigerator doors
If your fridge or freezer door is sagging or misaligned it can cause cool air to escape. To adjust your fridge door, just take off the hinge cap and loosen the hinge screws. Next, align the door correctly so it lines up with the top of the fridge. For upper doors, adjust the top hinge only. For lower doors, adjust the middle hinge.

Read MoreHow to deep clean your refrigerator
November 15th is National Clean Out Your Fridge Day! With the busy holiday season coming up, this is a good time to tackle your refrigerator. Your refrigerator will need to handle extra demands as you get ready to stock extra groceries and store leftovers. We share our top tips and show you how to deep clean your refrigerator.
Deep cleaning your refrigerator will remove unpleasant odours and help it run more efficiently. If your fridge is dirty or cluttered it will cause your appliance to work extra hard in order to keep all its contents cold. This can result in a rise in your energy bill.
How often should you give your refrigerator a clean?
Wiping the interior and exterior of your refrigerator should be part of your weekly cleaning routine. When a mess happens in your fridge, clean it immediately to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. A more thorough, deep clean should be done at the start of each season.
You will need:
Dishwashing detergent
Sponge
Baking soda
Microfibre or soft cloth
Handy hint: Before you start, unplug the fridge. This will allow your glass and plastic shelves to come down to room temperature so that they can be easily removed, without the risk of cracking.
Start by removing all contents
Place perishables such as meat and dairy in a refrigerated cooler bag with ice to keep them cool. Check use by dates and ditch any expired products. Ditch any questionable left overs.
Remove all fridge shelves, drawers and door inserts
Give them a good soak in warm, soapy water (a laundry tub will be handy for this task). Then wash thoroughly with a sponge and detergent. Rinse well and allow to dry.
Clean the refrigerator interior
Using a solution of 1 part baking soda to 7 parts water, create a paste and apply to the interior of your fridge before wiping with a microfibre or soft cloth. Pay attention to hard-to-reach places and crevices and tackle these with a toothbrush.
Once everything has been thoroughly cleaned, use a fresh, damp cloth and wipe off any excess residue. You can also spray with a food safe cleaner. We recommend Aktivo Fridge Cleaner & Deodoriser – an effective all in one spray that cleans, deodorises and sanitises.
Wipe down the fridge door seal
Your fridge door seal can collect crumbs, dust and spills. Use a soft, damp cloth and warm soapy water to clean the seal, then dry thoroughly. Inspect the seal for any signs of wear and tear. If you find any cracks or tears, it is time to get a replacement seal.
Clean the refrigerator coils
Over time, dust and dirt accumulate on your refrigerator coils (these are also called condenser coils). These coils are responsible for the heat extraction process that allows the refrigerant to circulate. To reduce your energy bill and extend the lifespan of your fridge, give the coils a regular clean
Replace your fridge water filter
If your fridge has a fridge water filter, you will need to replace it regularly (approximately every 6 months). A clean filter reduces nasties and contaminants like iron, particulates, lead and mercury in your drinking water and ice cubes.
It is time to replace your fridge water filter when:
Its been longer than 6 months since you last replaced it
The replacement light is on
Your water has an unpleasant taste or odour.
Statewide offer genuine fridge water filters for leading brands including LG, Samsung and Fisher & Paykel.
Need help replacing your fridge water filter?
Check out our easy guides with step by step instructions for LG fridge water filters, Fisher & Paykel fridge water filters and Samsung filters.
Wipe down the exterior
Use a damp cloth to give the exterior a good clean, then buff dry with a microfibre cloth. If your fridge has a stainless-steel finish, use a stainless steel polish to remove fingerprint, smears and water spots. We recommend Aktivo Stainless Steel Polish.
Organise your fridge and keep food fresh longer
To prevent the growth of bacteria and other microbes that make food spoil, food needs to be maintained at cold temperatures.. Organise your fridge well and keep it fresh longer.
Upper shelves - Good for prepared foods, deli meats, drinks and leftovers
Lower shelf – Best for eggs, dairy and raw meat
Crisper - Maintain freshness by storing fruit and vegetables in the drawers
Door shelves - This is the best place for condiments, juices and water
Freezer – Ice, frozen fruits and vegetables and meat

Read MoreRefrigerator not cooling? Try our easy troubleshooting tips
If you find your refrigerator is not cooling effectively, there are a number of steps to diagnose and fix it. Before you call out your refrigerator repairer, give our easy troubleshooting tips a try.
Safety first! Always switch off the power if you are investigating internal components of your fridge.
Check the power
It may seem simple but a power cord that has come loose or a tripped circuit breaker can shut down your fridge in an instant. Open your fridge door and if the light is still on, your power is intact. Is the light off? Make sure your power cord is plugged in firmly. If that doesn’t do the trick, check your circuit breaker and flick the switch back on if required.
Don't overload your fridge
Keep your fridge well stocked but do not overload it. Your fridge needs proper air circulation to work best. Overloading your fridge will block the airflow. Likewise, a refrigerator with not enough items can also fail to function efficiently. Stack your fridge accordingly and ensure items are clear from vents. Check out our blog guide for handy organising tips.
Check your vents
Sometimes food and items may be blocking your vents, causing obstruction. In turn, cold air will be unable to circulate through your fridge. Try re-organising your fridge to ensure airflow is not restricted.
Set your thermostat temperature control to the right range
To keep perishable foods safe, set your temperature to an optimal range. The Australian Standard for fridges uses a fresh food compartment average temperature of 3°C.
Your freezer should be set close to -18°C. Temperature controls (also known as thermostats) can be easily bumped by food items. Exterior digital controls can easily be changed by inquisitive little fingers! (It is a good idea to lock the settings to prevent this from happening). Reset the temperature to the correct range.
Check your fridge door seal
The seal (also called a gasket) around your refrigerator or freezer door seals cold air in. This ensures your food stays fresh and maintains safe temperatures. Be sure to wipe down the seal regularly with warm soapy water and a sponge. You can also give it a light scrub using an old toothbrush before wiping down with a damp cloth.
Regularly check your seal for any signs of wear and tear or damage. A defective seal will allow cool air from the fridge to escape. Replacing a door seal is simple. You can find the right fridge door seal for your fridge here.
Clean your condenser coils
Clean your condenser coils (located underneath or behind your refrigerator). The life span and performance of your fridge can be impacted by coils that are clogged with debris and dust. To clean your coils, first unplug the fridge from the power source. Using a vacuum with a narrow attachment, vacuum any dust from around the coils. Its a good idea to do this once or twice a year to keep your fridge cooling properly.
Make sure the fridge is level
When your fridge is level, you are able to shut and seal the doors properly. To check your fridge is level, grab a spirit level and test the top of the fridge. You can then make slight adjustments to the feet of your fridge until the bubble on your spirit level is centred.
Have you tried our troubleshooting tips and are still experiencing issues? Call in a refrigerator repairer to professionally diagnose your problem. There could be a bigger issue that requires attention, such as a coolant leak or faulty compressor.
